The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed to continue its ongoing two-week nationwide warning strike, saying the Federal Government has failed to act on its long-standing promises to revitalise the university system.
Chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Adefemi Afolabi, told newsmen on Tuesday that members across campuses were fully complying with the industrial action. He said the strike followed months of government inaction after receiving the latest report on the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement submitted in February 2025.
“For eight months, nothing has happened,” Afolabi said. “The government has the power and the finances to resolve this, but it chose to wait until the strike before issuing a ‘no work, no pay’ warning.” Students who spoke to reporters blamed the government for the recurring strikes, saying the disruption of the academic calendar was unfair.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Tunji Alausa has directed vice-chancellors to enforce the “no work, no pay” policy against striking lecturers. The ministry expressed frustration that ASUU embarked on another industrial action despite repeated calls for dialogue.
