The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan Zone, says the Federal Government has yet to meet its key demands, warning that a nationwide strike is imminent if negotiations remain stalled.
Zonal Coordinator, Prof Biodun Olaniran, speaking at LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, said the government has handled the ongoing dispute with “discouraging unseriousness,” despite the one-month window issued after ASUU suspended its warning strike in October.
He noted that only eight days remain before the ultimatum expires, yet “nothing significant has been done beyond misinformation and propaganda.”
ASUU acknowledged the recent release of some promotion arrears and third-party deductions but stressed these gestures do not address its core demand: the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
The union insists that the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed-led committee must produce a new, competitive salary structure that reflects the country’s inflationary realities.
Olaniran said ASUU’s NEC reviewed the government’s engagement and warned that failure to conclude the renegotiation could once again disrupt academic calendars nationwide. The union urged stakeholders to pressure the government to avert what it described as a looming crisis for public universities.
