Chief Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has called on the Federal Government to take urgent measures to tackle insecurity across Nigeria.
Speaking during the 16-day Advocacy Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence, in partnership with UN Women, Babalola stressed that prioritising citizens’ welfare is key to ending violence.
Highlighting the university’s record, he noted that ABUAD has maintained a safe environment since its inception, with nine out of every ten first-class graduates being women.
He lamented the rising attacks in schools and communities, which have created widespread fear. He urged governments at all levels to protect all citizens, not just women and girls.
“The duty of government is the welfare and safety of its people. Safety must extend to farms, roads, schools and workplaces,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Smaranda Olarinde reaffirmed ABUAD’s commitment to partnering with government and organisations to safeguard women and girls. At the same time, Dr Tosin Tume highlighted the multifaceted impact of digital violence and advocated for education, policy development, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration as remedies.
