The 37th convocation ceremony of Federal University of Technology, FUTO, Owerri
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged federal universities to pursue sustainable funding options to address infrastructure challenges.
Speaking at the 37th Convocation of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Tinubu, represented by Prof. Jesse Uneke, highlighted his administration’s achievements, including the Energising Education Programme (EEP), which delivered uninterrupted 24-hour solar-powered electricity to FUTO.
He announced interventions, including N50 billion for unpaid allowances, N150 billion for the NEED Assessment Fund, and interest-free loans of up to N10 million through the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund.
Acknowledging funding constraints, Tinubu encouraged universities to leverage endowment funds and public-private partnerships to build hostels, staff quarters, and other infrastructure.
“Universities should deepen industry engagement, boost research, and apply innovations to communities. Technology must serve humanity, and FUTO must bridge knowledge and national prosperity,” he said.
FUTO Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nnenna Oti highlighted staff promotions and student access to NELFund loans, while Pro-Chancellor Senator Jack Tilley-Gyado and Chancellor Alhaji Muhammadu Aliyu Mustafa noted challenges, including staff housing shortages and land encroachment.
The ceremony featured honorary degrees for Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Mrs Ngozi Ekeoma, and postgraduate degrees were awarded to 542 candidates.
