Senator Douye Diri, Bayelsa State Governor
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has justified the establishment of multiple medical institutions in the state, saying the move aims to address the acute shortage of human resources in the health sector.
Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, stated this on Wednesday while receiving an 11-man accreditation team from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) at the Government House, Yenagoa.
The team is in a position to conduct accreditation exercises at the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) and Niger Delta University (NDU).
He explained that the BMU was created to complement the NDU’s Faculty of Medicine and strengthen manpower development in the healthcare system, emphasising that the state prioritises human capital investment over physical infrastructure.
“Bayelsa is in a hurry to develop and catch up with its peers. We need more skilled personnel than physical structures,” Ewhrudjakpo said.
Dr Nnaemeka Nwakanma, leader of the MDCN team, commended the state government’s investment in medical education, noting that Bayelsa could soon become a model for healthcare development in the Niger Delta.
