The Chinese Consul General, Ms. Yan Yuqing, has opened a new centre called the “Window to China” at the University of Port Harcourt. This is a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Nigeria and China.
The well-attended event took place on Thursday, June 12, 2025. In her short comment, Ms. Yuqing said the centre is not just a building, but a place where people can learn about the rich and beautiful culture of the Chinese people, their history in education, language, and other exciting new ideas. She said it will help students, teachers, and researchers better understand China and bring the two countries closer together. She added, “This centre is a doorway to learning and friendship between Nigeria and China.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, said the centre came at the right time. He explained that China is very important in the world today, and Nigerian universities should establish strong partnerships to enhance their growth in learning and research. Prof. Georgewill said the new centre will help students and staff learn from each other, work with other schools, and follow the best ideas from around the world.
Many special guests were at the event, including university officials, Chinese consulate staff, students, and diplomats. The “Window to China” Centre will offer Chinese language classes, cultural exhibitions, seminars, and events to help Nigerians and Chinese people better understand each other.
