Nigeria’s first tuition-free digital academy has opened in Ewatto, Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
Equity Learning Academy (ELA), established by Dr Friday Airhia and his wife, Prof Bosede Airhia, aims to expand access to quality education for vulnerable children in rural communities.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Airhia said the initiative “gives every child from kindergarten to basic one lessons tailored to their learning pace,” adding that the model could be replicated nationwide with more partners.
The school, powered by solar energy, provides a constant electricity supply for digital tools, including computers and projectors. It also provides free uniforms, meals, textbooks and backpacks, alongside a digital library, modern classrooms and IT-trained teachers.
Prof. Airhia stated that the project was established through the Shekinah Mentors International Initiative, with support from donors, emphasising that “continued backing is needed to expand the model.”
Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, who presided over the inauguration, described the academy as “an innovation that complements the government’s mission of universal quality education.”
The founders said the school’s facilities, including 24-hour wi-fi and recreational spaces, create a holistic learning environment for pupils.
