The Edo State Government has approved the absorption of 4,000 volunteer teachers under the EdoStar Teaching Programme and the recruitment of an additional 500 teachers to address the shortage of educators in public schools.
Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, announced this in Benin City during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, saying the move reflected Governor Monday Okpebholo’s resolve to strengthen the state’s education system and reward dedication.
Iyamu said appointment letters would be presented to the volunteer teachers on October 15, bringing an end to years of uncertainty for thousands who had served without confirmation. He explained that the initiative, along with the recruitment of new teachers, would help close manpower gaps in both primary and secondary schools.
The commissioner also disclosed that more than 68 new schools had been built in less than a year. At the same time, over 6,000 teachers had received training in digital and technical disciplines, including robotics and artificial intelligence. He further announced the introduction of a Teachers’ Fitness Day, to be observed annually on October 4, and a Best Teacher Award slated for November 25 to recognise outstanding educators.
During the event, the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers commended the government for implementing the ₦75,000 minimum wage and improving school infrastructure. However, it urged greater attention to staffing in rural areas.
World Teachers’ Day, celebrated globally on October 5, honours the contributions of educators under this year’s theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”
