Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, VC of UNILORIN
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has urged newly inducted optometrists to resist the urge to leave Nigeria, stressing that their skills are critical to the nation’s healthcare sector.
Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony for the 2024/2025 Optometry and Visual Science graduates on December 5, 2025, Prof. Egbewole, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola, congratulated the 37 graduates and called on them to uphold integrity, dedication, and service above financial gain.
Dr Obinna Edwin Awiaka, Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), echoed the call, advising graduates to prioritise professional competence, humility, and compassionate patient care. He encouraged them to remain connected to their alma mater and contribute to the department’s growth.
The Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Rotimi Olusanya Arise, reminded inductees that the oath signifies a solemn commitment to serve humanity. He urged continuous learning, active research, and the adoption of modern technologies to deliver high-quality eye care.
All 37 candidates who sat for the professional examinations passed, reflecting both their hard work and the faculty’s mentorship. Prof. Arise commended the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership for strengthening the Department of Optometry and Visual Science through infrastructure and academic support.
