The First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s school leadership to address poor management, absenteeism, and declining learning outcomes. She made the remarks during a visit to her alma mater, the University of Ibadan, on Monday, October 6, where she delivered a lecture to 300-level students of the Department of Educational Management.
Speaking under the course “Leadership in Formal Organisations,” Dr Oyebanji urged future educational administrators to combine moral integrity with professional competence. She highlighted that effective school leadership requires service, accountability, and the courage to implement reforms that improve teaching and learning.
“Leadership is not a title; it is action, responsibility, and a vision for lasting impact,” she said, warning that Nigeria’s education system faces significant challenges unless principals and administrators lead with integrity.
The First Lady also encouraged students to become proactive change agents in their schools and communities, cultivating ethical consciousness and emotional intelligence.
Dr Oyebanji’s visit, which drew a large audience of students and faculty, underscored her commitment to education and leadership development, reflecting her ongoing advocacy for policies that empower teachers, enhance school management, and improve educational outcomes across Nigeria.
