Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Professor Umar Katsayal, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to tackle train derailments in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja, Prof. Katsayal told his audience that frequent derailments threaten the safety of passengers and the growth of the railway sector. The Vice-Chancellor said solutions are not far-fetched. The Nigerian Railway officials must ensure they have regular maintenance of tracks and trains, strict adherence to safety procedures, and the training of operators and maintenance staff.
He emphasised the need for strategic partnership, adding that the government alone cannot handle the challenges. He noted that such collaboration will make the system safer and more reliable.
Katsayal added that a functional railway system is vital for national development, as it eases the movement of goods and people while boosting economic growth. He urged urgent action to ensure that rail transport becomes a dependable backbone of Nigeria’s economy.
