Experts have urged the principals of Lagos State government-owned schools to prioritise the mental health of their teachers to improve the quality of education.
During the induction ceremony for 137 new principals organised by the Lagos Chapter of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, Mrs Okewole Ranti, a retired Coordinating Director at the Office of Education Quality Assurance, explained that principals should collaborate with their vice principals, department heads, and school prefects to foster a culture of shared responsibility.
“Effective leadership goes beyond power,” she stated.
“Principals should empower their teachers and staff to participate in decision-making processes.” She also spoke on the need for flexibility in management and responsiveness to changing circumstances.
Ranti further encouraged the use of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, to enhance teaching. She acknowledged the challenges faced by teachers but stated that many tasks could be made easier with the right technological skills.
In his speech, Mr. Olushola Masheyi, the president of Lagos’ ANCOPSS chapter, called on the new principals to lead with integrity, inspire their teams, and promote academic excellence.
He reminded them that their roles extend beyond administrative tasks and that they must be role models, shaping their schools’ academic and moral standards.
