The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) says the Federal Government is stepping up investment in renewable energy to address electricity shortages in universities and other public institutions.
ECN Director-General, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, said this in a statement on Thursday marking his second year in office. He noted that the Renewed Hope Solarisation Project, introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has accelerated the rollout of 2-megawatt solar-hybrid systems nationwide.
Abdullahi said the first phase of the project has been completed at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, General Hospital Bangi in Niger State, the Enugu Research Centre, and the University of Abuja. Communities in Benue, Kebbi, Kaduna, Ekiti and Osun States have also benefited, with more institutions lined up for the next phase.
He added that the ECN has signed several agreements for mini-grid solar deployment and launched a National Energy Policy and Master Plan to coordinate renewable projects and attract investment.
Abdullahi also revealed that a pilot Green Hydrogen Plant has been established to promote local clean energy technologies and support Nigeria’s transition to sustainable power
