They share more than a first name. Professor Olatunji Dare and Mr. Olatunji Bello, both celebrated journalists from different generations, are linked by a passion for public service and a commitment to education that goes far beyond words.
Prof. Dare, a renowned satirist and media scholar, has spent five decades shaping public discourse. Bello, a seasoned editor and lawyer, now heads Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. Last week, their parallel journeys of impact converged — not in newsrooms, but on university campuses.
On August 20, Bello donated a 550-seat, ultra-modern auditorium to the Lagos State University (LASU) Epe Campus. The project, conceived during his 60th birthday, followed an earlier scholarship scheme he launched at 50, which supported students in law, medicine, mass communications, engineering, and social sciences.
A day later, Dare gifted his elaborately furnished country home to the newly established Kogi State University, Kabba. Built on land his mother purchased in 1974, the property — now the Olatunji Dare Building — symbolises a promise fulfilled four decades late but with profound significance. Their gestures, profoundly personal and sacrificial, highlight what private citizens can contribute to revitalising Nigeria’s struggling education system.
