The Federal Ministry of Education has announced new responsibilities for the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) as part of reforms to strengthen teaching and improve learning quality nationwide.
In a statement on Sunday, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa said the reform is aimed at streamlining education delivery, boosting accountability, and ensuring Nigerian children are taught by qualified professionals.
The Minister noted that under the new framework, TRCN will now handle mandatory teacher registration and licensing, integrate teacher data into the national Education Management Information System, and enforce ethics and discipline in the profession. The NTI will focus on its core mandate of in-service teacher training and continuous professional development, delivering distance-based programmes aligned with national standards.
According to the ministry, the reform will enhance professionalism, improve oversight, and guarantee that only well-trained and licensed teachers manage classrooms across the country.
