University students nationwide have welcomed the suspension of the two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), following a late-night National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
ASUU said it suspended the strike after renewed discussions with the Federal Government and commitments to address long-standing issues, including funding, welfare and implementation of past agreements.
The decision ends two weeks of halted lectures in public universities, easing fears of another prolonged shutdown.
Students and parents have expressed relief, describing the move as a sign of hope for academic stability. Many universities have already released revised timetables to recover lost time.
Education analysts commended the union’s action but warned that without sustainable financing and consistent policy implementation, future disruptions remain very likely. ASUU’s core demands, including revitalisation funds, unpaid allowances, and the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, are yet to be fully met.
For now, both parties are expected to maintain dialogue to prevent another breakdown in academic activities across the nation’s universities.
