The National Industrial Court sitting in Calabar has fixed December 2 for ruling on an application seeking to halt the remittance of check-off dues from the University of Calabar (Unical) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to its national body.
Justice Sanusi Kado set the date after hearing arguments in the suit filed by Dr John Inaku and nine other lecturers against ASUU (National) and two others. The claimants accused the Unical ASUU leadership of financial misconduct between 2019 and 2023.
Their counsel, Mr Samuel Ikpeme, sought an injunction to restrain ASUU from enforcing any suspension against the Unical chapter or receiving check-off dues, pending the case’s determination.
Defence counsel, Mr C. Chukwu, urged the court to dismiss the application for lack of merit. The claimants are also demanding the refund of ₦138.7 million in allegedly unremitted dues and ₦200 million in damages. Justice Kado adjourned ruling on the interim application until December 2 after hearing both parties’ submissions.
