Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation
The Federal government has pledged to strengthen the legal framework guiding the Federal School of Surveying (FSS), Oyo, to improve its performance and contribution to national development.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the commitment while speaking at the school’s 22nd convocation ceremony. He said the federal government would continue to support the institution, adding that recent policies were aimed at expanding access to quality and affordable education.
Mr Akume cited initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as part of efforts to ease students’ financial burden. He urged graduating students to apply the skills and knowledge acquired during their training to improve professional surveying practice in the country.
The convocation also featured the award of honorary fellowships to several dignitaries, including Senator Akume, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, and two federal lawmakers, Yunus Akintunde and Akeem Adeyemi. The school said the honours recognised their contributions to education, particularly to the development of FSS.
The Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adebomeyin, described the ceremony as a landmark in the institution’s history. At the same time, the Rector, Dupe Olayinka-Dosunmu, said the school had produced highly skilled professionals in surveying and geoinformatics for Nigeria’s economy.
