Geneith Pharmaceuticals Ltd has started a quiz competition for young people in secondary schools and tertiary institutions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This is designed to help reduce the number of hours lost to hospital visits due to malaria.
The competition aims to educate Nigerian youth about the dangers of malaria and provide them with ways to prevent it.
Prince Cletus Ilobanafor, CEO of Geneith Health for Africa, told journalists in Abuja that the contest will be conducted both online and offline. He said winners stand to receive over 400 million naira in prizes, while scholarships worth more than 600 million naira will be given to deserving students.
Ilobanafor explained, “This competition is for students only — those in junior and senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions. Others, like Corps members, cannot take part.”
He added that the competition starts with online registration, where participants will answer questions within five minutes on their phones. After this, winners from each state will compete in person, with health and education officials overseeing the process to ensure fairness and transparency.
“There will also be health walks across the 36 states to raise more awareness about malaria,” he said.
We must work with our students; we need to address these issues to create awareness about the effects of malaria. However, the primary objective is not just about competition; the target is to eliminate malaria in Nigeria. Many people go to the hospital because of malaria every month. Too many people are being admitted to the hospital as a result of malaria in Nigeria. We are out to ensure this is drastically reduced.
