The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has marked the 2025 World Anaesthesia Day with a series of emergency preparedness and life-saving sensitisation exercises for pupils and patients in Benin City.
As part of the commemoration, pupils of the UBTH Staff School were trained on basic emergency response skills. At the same time, awareness campaigns and public lectures were held across the hospital’s outpatient clinics.
Speaking during the event, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, said the programme was aimed at raising public understanding of the crucial role of anaesthesiologists in emergency health care.
Represented by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Stanley Okugbo, she described anaesthesiologists as indispensable to all clinical departments and praised their contribution to the hospital’s emergency services.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu reaffirmed UBTH’s commitment to strengthening anaesthesia services and improving emergency response capacity. Dr Omajuwa Dawodu, who represented the Department of Anaesthesia, said this year’s theme, “Anaesthesiology and Health Emergencies,” was apt, given the rising need for rapid medical interventions in crises.
