A civic platform, MonITNG, has raised alarm over the poor state of Government Science Teachers College, Gulu, Niger State, describing it as a symbol of years of neglect.
In a new report, the group said classrooms are flooded, walls cracked, roofs sagging, and the compound overrun by weeds, creating unsafe conditions for students and staff. Photos shared from the school also showed broken desks and structures that could collapse at any time.
MonITNG stressed that science teachers’ colleges are vital for producing quality teachers to drive innovation, yet Gulu College has become a “shell of decay.” It accused the state of mismanaging billions of naira meant for education, noting that the crisis extends beyond Gulu to many schools across Niger State.
The group urged Governor Umar Mohammed Bago to declare a state of emergency on education, renovate schools, and ensure transparent use of funds. It warned that delay could cost the state “an entire generation to ignorance and poverty.”
