The only public school in Ajaokuta, Kogi State—LGEA Primary School—has become a hazardous environment for children, with leaking roofs, damaged walls, and inadequate furniture. A civil society group, MonITNG, visited the school and described it as a death trap.
Built in 1973, the school now has classrooms with no ceilings or desks. Many pupils sit on the floor or broken chairs while writing on shaky tables. Damaged furniture is dumped outside like garbage. MonITNG blamed the school’s poor state on long-term government neglect. They criticised former Governor Yahaya Bello for spending state money on expensive private education for his children, while public schools, such as LGEA, are left to deteriorate. The group called on the current Governor, Usman Ododo, to take urgent action. “Fix the roof. Provide furniture. Give these children a chance,” they said, urging the state to focus on real development instead of political talk.
