Inclusive Education Workshop Seeks Nationwide Policy Action

The Federal Ministry of Education has convened a national policy workshop aimed at accelerating inclusive education across Nigeria. Held in Abuja, the forum brought together top officials, education experts, and development partners to deepen commitment to equitable learning for all children, especially those with disabilities or from marginalised backgrounds.

Discussions centred on redesigning classrooms, adapting teaching methods, and enhancing support systems to cater to the diverse needs of learners. The gathering emphasised the importance of translating Nigeria’s National Policy on Inclusive Education and Gender Education into actionable strategies that directly impact schools.

Professor Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, emphasised the importance of collaboration among school owners, states, and federal authorities to create inclusive, gender-responsive environments. Dr Iyela Ajayi of NSSEC called Special Education Desk Officers the “architects of inclusion,” advocating stronger measures against school-based gender violence.

NCPWD’s Executive Secretary, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, noted that over 35.5 million Nigerians live with disabilities, calling for urgent infrastructure upgrades and inclusive pedagogical practices. Mr. Kehinde Osinaike of the Federal Ministry of Education urged translating policy into real classroom change. Participants reviewed progress since the rollout of the revised national policy, noting improved adoption but flagging persistent gaps in educator training, public awareness, and infrastructure. The workshop reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4, ensuring inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all learners.
