Nigerian music executive Jude Okoye has called for a minimum educational qualification for political office holders in the country.
The CEO of Northside Entertainment, known for managing the music duo P-Square, made the remarks via his Instagram story, where he advocated for a constitutional reform that would require all political aspirants to hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a university. “How hard is it to reform our electoral act, making at least a bachelor’s degree a benchmark for qualification to run for any office in Nigeria? We cannot have the uneducated leading the educated. Makes zero sense,” Okoye wrote.
His comments come amid ongoing public discourse about the competency of elected officials and the role educational background plays in governance. While Okoye is primarily recognised in the entertainment industry, his stance adds to growing calls for a more merit-based political structure. The proposal has drawn mixed reactions online, with some agreeing that education is key to effective leadership, while others argue that formal qualifications alone do not guarantee good governance.
