The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has ordered parents of students at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) to withhold payment of the N750,000 convocation fee pending an investigation into their complaints.
The Commission also directed the university not to withhold certificates or mobilise for NYSC due to non-payment.
The directive follows petitions from concerned parents challenging the fee and seeking PCACC’s intervention. However, MAAUN proprietor, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Gwarzo, insisted the private university will hold its December convocation as scheduled. He defended the fee, noting it is lower than that of other private institutions in the state.
A complaint from affected students alleged attempts to negotiate fee reductions individually, in violation of agreed protocols that allowed discussion only among parents, university officials, and government representatives.
MAAUN maintains it will proceed with the convocation, adding that any dissatisfied parties may seek legal recourse.
