The Confluence University of Science and Technology in Kogi State has held its first convocation, awarding degrees to 266 students across its first two graduating sets.
At a briefing ahead of the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdulrahman Salawu said 31 graduates achieved first-class honours — a milestone he described as “worth celebrating” for an institution established only five years ago.
The university, located in Osara, was created to expand access to science and technology education in the state. Professor Salawu said the maiden convocation was a testament to the state government’s investment in laboratories, lecture theatres, hostels and digital facilities, which have enabled the institution to expand from 11 foundation programmes to 57 accredited courses. Its enrolment now exceeds 5,000 students.
He said CUSTECH’s growth had been strengthened by partnerships with organisations including the Power Equipment and Electrical Machinery Development Institute in Okene, the National Iron Ore Mining Company in Itakpe, Ajaokuta Steel Company and private-sector firms such as Unicane Industries and Mangal Cement.
The vice-chancellor said the university remained committed to research that addresses development needs in Kogi and beyond, adding that graduates were expected to become “problem-solvers and ambassadors” of the institution.
