The Kwara State House of Assembly has expressed concern over reports that some students in tertiary institutions are selling their sperm and eggs to cope with economic hardship.
The issue was raised by Rukayat Shittu, member representing Owode/Onire Constituency, who cited findings from Kwara State University, Malete, and Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
She warned that the trend poses serious medical, psychological and social risks. Male donors reportedly receive between ₦30,000 and ₦50,000, while egg donation often involves invasive and risky medical procedures.
“Most students enter these arrangements without fully understanding the consequences, driven largely by economic hardship,” Shittu told the Assembly. She called on relevant government agencies to sensitise students across tertiary institutions and protect them from exploitation.
The motion has sparked debate among residents. Yahaya Bola Nurudeen described the intervention as timely, while Musa Tajudeen argued that poverty is the primary driver of the issue.
The Assembly’s move has drawn attention to the broader challenges faced by students, with stakeholders urging the government to combine awareness campaigns with more comprehensive socioeconomic reforms.
