The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has accredited 19 academic programmes at the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
This accreditation follows a comprehensive assessment conducted by the NBTE team, led by Dr. Fatima Umar, Director of the Programmes Department for Polytechnics.
The evaluation occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as part of the institution’s commitment to maintaining high educational standards.
During the assessment, Dr. Umar commended the Rector of the Polytechnic, Mrs. Eduma Essien, for her efforts in preparing the institution for the accreditation process.
She spoke on the importance of adhering to established educational standards, stating, “While we will assess with empathy, we will not compromise on standards for the benefit of Nigerian students.”
Dr. Umar further assured that the NBTE team would thoroughly review all aspects of the programmes to ensure they meet long-term educational standards.
In her welcome address, Rector Mrs Essien expressed gratitude to the NBTE and its Executive Secretary for the opportunity to present the institution’s programmes for accreditation.
She noted that within three months of assuming office, the polytechnic had successfully prepared 19 programmes for evaluation.
Mrs Essien stated that six programmes were presented for full accreditation, while 13 were submitted for a resource inspection.
She also acknowledged the support of the state government, which she credited for the institution’s preparedness.
Mr. Cyril Ebong, the South-South Zonal Director of NBTE, remarked that the polytechnic was fortunate to be among the few selected for the final round of physical accreditation.
He mentioned that accreditation processes would be outsourced and conducted digitally starting next month, marking a significant shift in the NBTE’s approach to programme evaluations.
The accreditation of these 19 programmes underscores the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana’s commitment to providing quality technical education. It aligns with the NBTE’s mission to ensure that polytechnics in Nigeria meet the necessary standards for academic excellence.
