A consultant neurologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Dr Temitope Farombi, has urged Nigerians to stop stigmatising people living with dementia.
Speaking during a public campaign in Ibadan organised to mark World Alzheimer’s Day 2025, she explained that dementia is a medical condition linked to ageing, not a spiritual attack as many believe. She emphasised that individuals affected by the disease require empathy, understanding, and proper care, rather than pity or discrimination.
Dr Farombi, who is also the founder of Brain Health Initiative Nigeria, noted that World Alzheimer’s Day, observed every September 21, aims to raise awareness about the disease and encourage early diagnosis and support for patients and their families.
She informed traders at Gbagi Gate and other markets that although dementia has no cure, it can be treated and managed with the right interventions. According to her, increasing public awareness will help reduce stigma and improve patient care.
