Key health leaders have urged newly inducted medical doctors from the University of Ibadan to remain in Nigeria and contribute to improving the nation’s healthcare system rather than emigrating abroad.
The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr Temitope Ilori; Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Fatima Kyari; and UI Vice Chancellor, Prof Kayode Adebowale, gave the charge during the induction of 136 new doctors held at the Civic Centre, Ibadan.
Ilori said the government heavily subsidises medical education, describing it as an investment that graduates must repay through service. She cautioned against the “Japa” trend, stressing that greener pastures abroad come with challenges.
Adebowale reminded the inductees that their oath represented a lifelong covenant with humanity, urging them to embody the “Ibadan brand” of ethical excellence.
Kyari also warned against professional misconduct, noting that unethical behaviour could lead to disciplinary action or removal from the MDCN register. At the event, Dr Ope Ilori, daughter of the NACA DG, emerged as the best graduating student in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
