The Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM), Apapa, Lagos, has released a new report titled “Brain Drain and Tech Skills Shortage in Nigeria: Navigating the ‘Japa’ Wave,” highlighting the impact of skilled migration on the nation’s technology sector.
Led by Dr Folarin Alayande and his team, the study revealed that nearly all Nigerian companies are suffering from a shortage of tech talent, a problem worsened by the mass exodus of skilled professionals. The report calls for urgent investment in education, workforce training and retention strategies.
NUTM President, Dr Babs Omotowa, said the institution was established to provide technology-driven education capable of transforming Nigeria’s economy. He noted that NUTM graduates have created over 700 jobs and raised more than $3 million in funding through innovation and entrepreneurship.
Tech entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji also urged long-term investment in talent development, stating that “excellence is not an accident, it results from sustained investment in people.”
The report was unveiled during the inauguration of the NUTM Technology Club, which aims to connect academia and industry to tackle national tech challenges.
