The Federal Government is working on a new policy to ensure that Nigerian students sponsored abroad return home after completing their studies.
Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, disclosed this at the first TETFund National Town Hall Meeting in Abuja. He said the plan will include a bond that requires beneficiaries of government scholarships to come back and contribute to national development.
Echono explained that the move is not a punishment but a way to protect Nigeria’s investment in human capital. He noted that many beneficiaries of foreign scholarships often stay back overseas, which he described as a significant setback to the country’s progress.
According to him, the new framework will help retain skilled professionals trained with public funds and ensure that their knowledge benefits Nigeria’s education, economy, and development goals.
