Dr. Festus Ifeanyi Anagwu, a Nigerian scientist makes breakthrough discovery
Dr Festus Ifeanyi Anagwu, a Nigerian scientist from Ihembosi, Anambra State, has made a significant breakthrough in high-performance polymer research with applications across aviation, defence, space, marine, energy, and oil-and-gas industries.
Dr Anagwu, who earned his B.Sc. from Anambra State University, Uli, and M.Sc. from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, completed his doctorate at Cranfield University, UK, collaborating with Daniel Preston (UK) and Alex Skordos (Greece). His latest study, published in Polymer, reveals a previously unknown phenomenon in polymer science and has attracted global attention.
His research focuses on vitrimers, a class of sustainable, repairable, and recyclable materials. Unlike traditional thermosets that thicken suddenly at the “gel point,” these polymers reach a stable viscosity plateau, allowing predictable flow during curing. Dr Anagwu attributes this behaviour to rapid internal bond rearrangements, a process he calls suppression of gelation.
Supported initially by the TETFund Scholarship and later by the EU-funded PLEIADES Project, his findings provide engineers with new models for predicting curing behaviour, viscosity evolution, and glass-transition development.
These tools are critical for designing lighter, stronger, and recyclable components in advanced composite structures.
