NOTAP commissions IPTTO at IMSU to boost research, cut reliance on foreign technology
The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) has inaugurated the 69th Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO) at Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, aiming to strengthen Nigeria’s research ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported technologies.
Speaking at the commissioning, NOTAP Director-General Obiageli Amadiobi said the office will support IMSU academics by facilitating patent applications for their inventions at no cost, thereby enhancing the university’s capacity to commercialise research outputs. She emphasised that expanding IPTTOs nationwide is key to improving intellectual property awareness and promoting locally developed technologies.
Vice-Chancellor of IMSU, Prof. Uchefula Chukwumaeze, described the facility as a strategic addition to the university’s innovation ecosystem, urging researchers to focus on demand-driven projects that generate economic value. Amadiobi also encouraged female researchers to engage with NOTAP’s incentive schemes for outstanding contributions in science, technology, and innovation.
The IPTTO will provide institutional support for patenting, technology transfer, and commercialisation, positioning IMSU as a research hub capable of translating innovations into market-ready products.
