The Ogun State Government has announced new rules to reduce unnecessary expenses in schools and ease the financial burden on parents.
Under the policy, only pupils finishing Primary 6, JSS3, and SS3 will be allowed to hold graduation ceremonies, and such events must be modest and straightforward. The government stated that the measure aims to discourage extravagant spending and maintain a focus on learning.
In addition, schools are now barred from changing textbooks every academic session. Each approved textbook must be used for at least six years before it is replaced. Officials explained that this will save parents money and cut down on waste.
The reforms are part of efforts to make education more affordable and student-centred. Parents and education watchers have commended the move, describing it as timely relief in a period of rising living costs. The government said schools that violate the rules will face strict sanctions.
