The cost of education in Ondo State may rise soon as government officials and stakeholders in the sector met in Akure on Thursday to review school fees ahead of the 2025/2026 academic session.
Presiding over the meeting, the newly appointed Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, urged caution in adjusting fees, warning that parents are already under financial pressure. “In this current economic climate, we must tread carefully,” Ajibefun said. “Our priority should be to ensure access to quality education without putting unbearable pressure on parents.”
Although the meeting concluded without disclosing the agreed-upon fee structure, officials stated that final decisions would be communicated to schools soon. The session was attended by representatives of SUBEB, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), and other education unions. Many parents across the state are anxiously awaiting the outcome, fearing that a hike could exacerbate the strain caused by inflation and the removal of fuel subsidies.
