The University of Ilorin has spotlighted Mr. Abideen Opeyemi Olasupo, Class of 2017, as the 50th honouree in its ongoing Alumni Spotlight series. This milestone coincides with the University’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebration slated for November 2025.
Olasupo, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, is the founder of Brain Builder Youth Development Initiative, Opab Gas Station, and FactCheck Africa. He has also completed executive programmes at Lagos Business School and Harvard Business School. He is the visionary behind MyAIFactChecker, Africa’s first AI-powered fact-checking platform designed to combat misinformation and disinformation. He also created HerSafeSpace, a WhatsApp-based chatbot offering support to survivors of tech-facilitated gender-based violence in Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Cameroon.
In 2025, Olasupo was selected for the prestigious AI Journalism Lab Leadership Cohort at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, City University of New York—one of only 20 leaders globally. His work has attracted global attention, featured by outlets such as Forbes, BBC, Al Jazeera, and Channels TV. In 2024, he addressed the One Young World Summit in Montréal, Canada, sharing a platform with global leaders, including the Canadian Prime Minister.
Olasupo is also a recipient of the Gani Fawehinmi Integrity Award for returning $2,397 mistakenly paid to him, an act that proves his commitment to ethical leadership. He has consulted for international organisations such as CIVICUS, Project Everyone, Restless Development, and Meta.
