Over 144 Schools to Benefit from ACCA Sustainability Hour

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has announced that more than 144 Nigerian schools will participate in its My ACCA Sustainability Hour initiative, which aims to promote environmental awareness and responsible leadership among young learners.

Launched in Lagos on Friday, the six-month programme targets students aged 10-16. It features monthly modules based on selected UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action, energy management, and poverty reduction.

Director for Africa at ACCA, Jamil Ampomah, said the initiative underscores the need to accelerate action toward the 2030 Agenda amid stalled global progress due to conflicts, climate change, and economic instability.

Special Adviser to the President on the National Economic and Development Council and Climate Change, Rukaiya El-Rufai, commended the initiative, describing education as central to achieving sustainable development.

She noted that teaching sustainability principles early would equip future generations with critical thinking and problem-solving skills to tackle global challenges.

ACCA said the programme’s framework is adaptable for global use and aligns with its broader climate action goals, including a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero status by 2045.
