ACCA Launches Sustainability Hour to Drive Green Education

Guests at the unveiling of ACCA's initiative to promote SDGs awareness among Nigerian students

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has launched the Sustainability Hour Programme, a new educational initiative to promote environmental awareness and responsible living among Nigerian schoolchildren.

The programme, developed in collaboration with educators and youth organisations, will dedicate 1 hour per week to interactive learning sessions on topics such as climate change, recycling, renewable energy, and sustainable lifestyles.

Speaking at the launch, ACCA Nigeria Country Head, Tom Isibor, said the initiative seeks to instil sustainability values early by helping students understand the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and encouraging advocacy-driven behaviour change.

“Our goal is to inspire young Nigerians to adopt sustainable habits and make responsible choices that secure the future of our planet,” Isibor stated. He noted that the pilot phase will focus on six SDGs, beginning with a six-month rollout across select schools before nationwide expansion.

Educators and government representatives commended the initiative, describing it as a timely step toward embedding sustainability in Nigeria’s education system. The launch also featured a fashion show of recycled outfits, a quiz, and student-led discussions on environmental responsibility.
