The Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr David O. Oyedepo, has recently called on lecturers at the institution to pursue excellence and aspire to become Nobel Prize winners.
He made the call during the University’s 200th Senate Sitting, which was celebrated with joy and thanksgiving. Dr Oyedepo thanked God for the school’s progress, highlighting its excellent safety record, absence of cultism, and overall growth. He said the best days of the university are still ahead.
“We have seen God’s hand in our journey,” he said. “Very soon, the world will start looking to us for answers. It will not just be about awards; it will be about global relevance.” Dr Oyedepo encouraged faculty members to work hard and remain committed to their calling. Using his own story, he shared how he stayed up many nights studying and reading about great church leaders and top global universities, all in a bid to build Covenant University into a world-class institution.
“Nobel Prize winners do not just appear from nowhere. They are hardworking people, fully dedicated to their field,” he said. “If all you want is to just teach in a classroom, that is not enough. You must dream bigger, think global, and work hard to make an impact.”
He recalled a personal moment when his wife was giving birth to their first child, and he was so focused on reading Charles Spurgeon’s Revival that he did not realise what was going on around him. He used the story to illustrate the level of dedication required to stand out truly. Dr Oyedepo ended his message with prayers, declaring that every lecturer at Covenant University is destined to become an international expert with a global voice.
Vice Chancellor Professor Timothy Anake thanked God for the milestone and expressed appreciation for the dedication of the staff. He also praised Dr Oyedepo for his vision and continued prayers and requested special blessings for those who witnessed both the 100th and 200th Senate sittings.
The event featured inspiring testimonies, including that of Professor Shalom Chinedu, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who thanked God for healing him from a serious illness, and Professor Abiodun Adebayo, the immediate past Vice Chancellor, who shared the joy of being inducted as a Fellow of both the Nigerian Academy of Science and the African Academy of Science. Also present were Pastor Abegunde Adebisi, Secretary of the Board of Regents; Professor Lanre Amodu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; and Mr Emmanuel Igban, Registrar.
