Parents and guardians of students at David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, Ebonyi State, are protesting a sharp increase in tuition fees.
The new fee structure shows Medicine and Surgery rising from ₦1.3 million in the 2023/2024 session to ₦1.5 million for 2025/2026, a 42.86% increase. Pharmacy and Nursing Sciences also jumped from ₦730,000 to ₦1.05 million, about 43.84% higher.
Many parents say the hike is outrageous, especially for a federal university, and comes amid severe economic hardship. Some complained that even private universities charge less for similar courses. A businessman, Chief Ozor, whose two children gained admission into Medicine and Pharmacy, said he cannot afford nearly ₦3 million in total fees. Parents are calling on the Minister of Education to intervene, saying quality education must remain affordable for ordinary Nigerians.
