The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to strictly enforce Campus Master Plan (CMP) policies for all universities and polytechnics.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, NITP President Ogbonna Chime said master plans are vital for orderly campus growth and proper development. He noted that many institutions lack these plans, leading to confusion in appointing Directors of Physical Planning.
Chime stressed that only registered town planners should prepare and implement CMPs, as they are trained for the job. He also called for such planners to exclusively hold the position of Director of Physical Planning. He also insisted that proper enforcement will ensure campuses have functional, well-organised layouts. He also criticised some state governments for confusing Geographic Information Systems with urban planning.
