The President of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Ifeoluwa Oyedele, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its ongoing strike and return to the classrooms.
Mr Oyedele appealed the association’s 55th Anniversary Awards and Recognition Dinner held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, on Friday night. He urged the striking lecturers to resume academic activities, saying no disagreement was beyond resolution. ASUU members in public universities began a two-week strike over pay and funding issues, just weeks after schools resumed for a new academic year.
Highlighting the association’s achievements, Oyedele said the alumni body had contributed significantly to UNILAG’s development through projects such as the Erastus Akingbola Postgraduate Hall and the Alumni Shopping Complex. He also announced plans for a 1,800-bed hostel project to ease students’ accommodation challenges and the launch of a mobile app to enhance alumni engagement.
UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, commended the alumni for their continued support and pledged to strengthen collaboration with the association. At the event, awards were presented to distinguished alumni, including Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and Eko Hospital co-founder, Dr Sonny Kuku.
