Ebonyi State University has expelled three students allegedly caught with firearms during the recently concluded Students’ Union Government election.
Vice Chancellor Prof Michael Awoke announced the expulsion at the inauguration of the new SUG executives at the university’s main campus in Abakaliki over the weekend. He said the decision followed a police investigation that led to the arrest of the students, who were accused of firing gunshots to disrupt the election and intimidate university officials. One student was reportedly injured in the incident.
Describing the act as “unacceptable and criminal,” Awoke said the expulsion was intended to deter violence, cultism, and intimidation within the institution. He warned that the use of firearms on campus or attempts to threaten lecturers for grades would not be tolerated.
“The issue of coming to the university with guns must stop. These students have been expelled and are no longer part of this university,” he said. Awoke added that the case was already in court and reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, and violence, insisting that EBSU must remain a place of learning, discipline, and peace.
