Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has transformed Union Secondary School, Obosi, into a smart school as part of his administration’s effort to modernise education across the state.
Formerly known as Girls’ Secondary School, Obosi, the institution, founded in 1977, has been renovated with new infrastructure, digital facilities, and enhanced learning resources.
The upgrades include re-roofed and repainted classroom blocks, tiled floors, over 1,000 chairs and tables, solar-powered electricity, a borehole, and an ICT laboratory equipped with computers and projectors.
The school principal, Mrs Comfort Ebele Onugha, described the intervention as a turning point, noting that the improvements have made the school more attractive to students. She disclosed that enrollment has spiked, prompting the introduction of admission examinations to manage the surge.
However, despite the progress, the school still faces several challenges, including inadequate classrooms, a lack of a Home Economics laboratory, and security concerns stemming from incidents of burglary and vandalism.
“Our major problem is the dearth of security operatives, who will guard our school buildings to prevent vandals and armed robbers from gaining entrance into the school premises. I am begging the Obosi community, the ODU leadership, and affluent Obosi indigenes to come to our aid regarding beefing up the security in our school,” Onugha said.
