The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has donated 20 solar-powered tricycles to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, to improve campus mobility and promote sustainable energy use.
Equipped with lithium-ion batteries and solar panels, each tricycle can travel 130-150 kilometres on a single charge. The units will complement the 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tricycles previously supplied by the Federal Government.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Adamu Ahmed, speaking during ABU’s 555th Regular Senate Meeting on October 30, 2025, expressed gratitude to TETFund, highlighting the tricycles’ potential to ease transportation for staff and students while advancing the university’s green initiatives.
The vehicles will be deployed once a dedicated charging station, being installed by IRS Green Energy Limited, is completed. Ahmed described the donation as a significant step in integrating renewable energy into the university’s operations and enhancing sustainable transportation on campus.
