Two Suicide Incidents Rock Ekiti Tertiary Institutions

The academic communities of Ekiti State have been thrown into mourning following two suicide-related incidents involving students of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI) and Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti.

A 300-level Science Laboratory Technology student of BOUESTI, identified as Olamilekan Alabi, reportedly took his life after ingesting a mixture of Sniper insecticide, Dettol, and an energy drink. His death, confirmed by multiple sources, has caused grief and outrage across the campus. A note he left behind indicated emotional distress, though the cause remains unclear.

In a related development, a 200-level Industrial Chemistry student of EKSU attempted suicide after an argument with her boyfriend. She allegedly ingested Sniper insecticide but was rescued and rushed to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

The two incidents have raised serious concerns about students’ mental health, with experts urging universities to strengthen counselling services and mental health awareness campaigns.
