The University of Ibadan has rolled out new faculties and high-demand academic programmes as part of a strategic expansion to solidify its position as Nigeria’s leading institution.
Speaking at the university’s 77th Foundation Day, Vice Chancellor Prof Kayode Oyebode Adebowale said the upgrades are designed to align UI’s curriculum with global innovation trends and national manpower needs. He stressed that the institution aims to boost doctoral output while modernising all undergraduate offerings.
UI has approved two new faculties, Nursing and Computing, alongside a Department of Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering under the Faculty of Technology.
Several programmes are already before the National Universities Commission for accreditation, including Social Work, Educational Technology, Computer Science Education, and Biomedical Engineering.
Under the new Faculty of Computing, the university has proposed Software Engineering, Data Science, Cyber Security and Information and Communication Technology for resource verification.
Adebowale confirmed that 5,900 undergraduates and 3,450 postgraduate students graduated this year, with 487 earning PhDs. UI also retained its status as Nigeria’s top institution in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings.
