The University of Abuja has launched a 12-week training programme to build the capacity of healthcare workers in clinical trials for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
The programme, organised by the university’s National Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease Research and Training (NCESRTA), runs from September 18 to November 27. IQVIA sponsors it in partnership with Bio Ventures for Global Health (BVGH).
Director of the centre, Prof. Obiageli Nnodu, said the training is crucial as Nigeria has one of the world’s highest SCD burdens. She stressed that effective clinical research would help attract global interventions to reduce complications among children and young adults.
Sickle Cell Disease, if not properly managed, can cause strokes, heart problems, kidney failure, and pregnancy-related risks. The centre is already active in genetic counselling, diagnosis, and data management. With this initiative, UniAbuja aims to enhance Nigeria’s contribution to advancing treatment and care for SCD patients.
