The selection process for the vice chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJ) is currently underway. Reacting to the process, the institution’s alumni association warned that the process must be transparent, fair, and honest.
Dr Rauf Olaiya Sarafadeen-Kunle, the national publicity secretary of the association, implored the governing council and key stakeholders to ensure the selection process is merit-based and credible. The Council must resist all external pressures, undue influences, or any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the selection process. The integrity of the University of Abuja is far more important than the ambition of any individual or interest group.
In addition, the association warned the Federal Ministry of Education to refrain from taking steps that can impede the university’s growth and development.
The association elaborated that the ministry’s past interventions have compromised the institution’s administrative capabilities. It further expressed its support for a Nigerian-trained professor as the university’s next Vice-Chancellor.
